Asplenium scolpendrum Hart's Tongue Ferns have strappy leaves and make a neat attractive evergreen clump of lively foliage. There are a good number of cultivars that introduce fronds that are slender, wavy edged, crested and tasseled. Sometimes there is more than one variant on the same plant. These good natured plants are attractive both as a foil to spring bulbs, or as pleasant ground cover in the vicinity of plants such as Acer palmatum forms. They may even self seed in your garden, and insert themselves attractively into crevices of their choice. The plant's growth rate and size will vary depending on planting position & conditions, and bloom, foliage and interest may vary from photo upon delivery, dependant on season. The individual pinnae (the clusters of leaves on each stem) are long and slender, closely packed with dainty leaflets. The short stem (the stipe) that holds each frond is white when young and quite quickly turns brown. This is happiest in a cool position where there is always moisture available. It enjoys humidity.
