Anthurium originate in tropical parts of the Americas. They are instantly recognisable because of the bright coloured broad oval spathe that could almost be made of plastic. It sits above the foliage and includes a columnar spadix at its centre. The green leaves are smooth and attractive in their own right. If well cared for the plant will flower for much of the year. These enjoy partially shaded sites in rich moist soil. Generally epiphytic and found growing in parts of Brazil, this has a dangling growth habit that makes a mesh of slender branching stems that become more slender along their length. They lack bristles and have a smooth and rather beautiful appearance. There are small red-purple flowers from mahogany buds, measuring up to 14mm in diameter and massed with white stamens. These are followed by red-brown fruits. These are curious cacti that are found growing in tropical rain forests, relishing shade and humidity. They have small flowers and juicy berries that are enjoyed, and distributed, by birds. Spathiphyllum 'Chopin' (widely known as a 'peace lily' are grown for their ornamental flowers that take the form of elegant spathes, often held well above the foliage and coloured white. Plants will flower for much of the year if happy. A lot of them are compact but some forms may reach over a metre in height. These need rich free-draining soil with bright indirect light and plenty of moisture with good humidity. Known for its air purifying effect, Spathiphyllum Vivaldi absorbs and degrades harmful gases. Humidity is improved and made healthier by effectively converting Co2 into oxygen. Spathiphyllum blooms for about four to ten weeks and then needs a few weeks of rest to develop new flower buds.
