Agapanthus 'Charlotte' sometimes known a the 'Blue African Lily' has rounded heads composed of large individual flowers. They are coloured pale blue with a broad and noticeable dark blue midline with a lighter blue lines on each side. The fully splayed petals are quite starry in their appearance. This variety is deciduous and flowers in July and August. Note: This is in the funnel group. Brachyglottis compacta 'Sunshine' is a fine foliage plant for a hot sunny spot, this brachyglottis has oval grey leaves which are white on their undersides and curve upwards. The flowers are yellow. It is good tempered and easy to grow, and can be cut back hard if it gets too big. You can try growing it as a specimen, where it will luxuriate if given plenty of space, or plant it among sun loving drought tolerant plants on a warm site. It is also an invaluable plant for a seaside garden as it can tolerate wind. A quiet plant, wintersweet has dark green long leaves which are somewhat pendulous. In the winter the bare branches carry small waxy yellow blooms that have a purple stain at their centre. This is a handsome, spiky plant that is coloured a light, bright looking pale grey green with a yellow leaf edging. It makes a beautiful eye catching feature. It may produce creamy fragrant flowers in June, held on a 1m (3ft) flowering spike. It is only slightly frost hardy and therefore only suited to the mildest parts of the country unless some protection is given. Cordyline Australis is a lovely spiky plant of some elegance. Sometimes known as 'the cabbage tree of New Zealand' it starts off as a fan of leaves but soon begins to hoist itself up on a stout stem. It can eventually become an evergreen tree up to 4m (15ft) high with a clean vertical trunk and forking branches. It settles happily in coastal gardens. There are sometimes creamy white flowers in huge panicles that are deliciously fragrant in June. The plant needs a sheltered spot as hard winters may kill it. Cupressus Sempervirens, sometimes referred to as the 'italian cypress' or 'pencil pine' is an amazing evergreen tree commonly known as the Italian Cypress Totem Pole and can grow up to 12m in height but has a narrow spread of only 1m. It will produce densely-packed luscious green foliage and its columnar habit makes it ideal as a focal point in any garden or patio. Erysimum 'Fragrant Star' is a sturdy looking plants with dense variegated foliage. The leaves are lance-shaped, coloured green with a cream and pink tinged edged, very showy. The flower buds, clustered at the stem tops are a dark red-purple. These open to very showy golden yellow columnar clusters of simple flowers, the deep buds a feature at the stem top. A good strong form that combines foliage and floral interest to good effect. April and May flowering. Escallonia laevis 'Gold Ellen' is grown for its bright, solid looking foliage. The long oval leaves are coloured bright golden yellow with a reddish rib and reddish tinted young growth. In June there are clusters of small tubular rose pink flowers with tints of white, especially within the tube of the flower. This makes a dense shrub, quite slow growing, and has a strong colour impact as it matures. This useful plant has low, sturdy rosettes of foliage. It sends up long-stalked, waving red flowers that can infiltrate themselves into the foliage and flowers of other plants.
