Abelia 'Kaleidoscope' is a showy form of the Abelia that is generally grown for the long lasting beauty of its flowers. In this variant, the foliage takes centre stage. The variegated leaves are green at their centre but with a bright yellow edge in spring. In autumn they take on orange and red tints. Attractive dense rounded evergreen shrub with variegated glossy leathery leaves. Aucuba Japonica 'Crotonifolia' is considered to be the best variegated aucuba. Large leafed, boldly spotted and generously blotched with gold, the handsome foliage from a distance has an extremely light and bright effect. Since the leaves are glossy and catch the light it can make an impact. Sometimes this, or one of its spotty friends are found filling a tiny London front garden, and they look great! This plant creates a silvery, shaggy dome with narrow arching leaves in pale green. It looks especially effective in winter if the dome is frosted. Convolvulus Cneorum is a lovely plant for a dry spot, or in the rock garden where it is particularly suited to the display of the silvery foliage. This showy plant has a spreading growth habit and makes a substantial plant, if it is warm enough for it to thrive. The leaves are long and coloured in shades of bright green, pale green and rich yellow. In addition, the leaf tips and some of the leaf body may be variously suffused with reddish pink shades. This is a handsome, spiky plant that is coloured a light bright looking pale grey green with a yellow leaf edging. It makes a beautiful eye catching feature. It may produce creamy fragrant flowers in June, held on a 1m (3ft) flowering spike. It is only slightly frost hardy and therefore only suited to the mildest parts of the country unless some protection is given. Escallonia 'Iveyi' is a handsome large shrub with dark green smooth and glossy looking leaves, plump ovals that have a fruity resinous scent when crushed. It flowers in autumn producing small panicles of sweet scented white flowers. It naturally makes a loose pyramidal shape and can be clipped to make a hedge, or grown as a quietly handsome focal point or background shrub. It is somewhat tender and needs the protection of a warm wall in the colder parts of the country. It can tolerate a little alkalinity, and needs sunshine. This showy plant has long, glossy leaves, rounded at their ends. The centre of the leaf looks as though it's been freshly painted with creamy-yellow, within the broad, irregularly green, outer margin. A curiously coloured shrub that is eye-candy, a popular impulse buy. It has a compact, dense growth habit with neat leaves spotted and marbled in tones of yellow, light and dark green. There is often a plain yellow area at the leaf centre. The young growth is on yellow stems and the leaves sometimes have touches of pink, especially in cold weather. The foliage detail varies considerably plant to plant, so best to choose it yourself. This busy shrub is excellent in a container where its curious and appealing character can best be appreciated.
