Laurus Nobilis Laurel Bay Tree has an extensive history throughout europe, made most popular by the romans who used wreaths of laurel as a head adornment signifying victory in sports, politics, poetry and war. Many a bust of a roman emperor features the signature wreath around the head. Even the berries had significance where priestesses would chew the berries before handing our prophecies, and keeping berries under pillows was believed to result in dreams of future events The foliage is a dark green colour with a distinct aroma and can be trimmed to form a neat columnar or cone shaped topiary tree. Elaeagnus x Submacrophylla 'Viveleg' Oleaster Plant is a brilliant variegated form of Oleaster, with a vivid green central colour and a fine golden variegated margin on each leaf. Euonymus japonicus 'Aureus' is a euonymus with rather eye catching foliage that grows in an upright reaching habit. Each leaf has a distinct yellow gold center, with a dark green margin. Fagus sylvatica, or more commonly known as the 'Common Beech' tree iis eally versatile plant that is used as both a specimen tree and a hedging plant, althoughthe latter you would generally start from bare root whips. Cupressus Goldcrest is a fantastic columnar conifer that has the most fantastic bright green foliage that radiates brightness. This is perhaps one of the most popular of 'golden' conifers, and its quite easy to see why! This particular specimen has been cut into a topiary spiral. Ilex Aquifolium 'Argentea Marginata' (sometimes known as the 'silver margined holly') is a classic form of holly with rich green foliage and a cream coloured margin. The leaves are spined but lose this defensive tool above a height of 2m where predatory creatures cant reach to have a nibble! Red berries make an appearance in autumn when male and female plants are located in the same vicinity. Ilex aquifolium 'Ingramii' is a particularly dense variety of Holly, and with a height of around 2.5m fully mature, it makes it a great option for a hedging holly. Its also a rather ineresting looking variety of holly with mottled variegated green and white foliage, with the tips of new growth a contrasting bright pink offering a very interesting show! Loropetalum Chinense 'Fire Dance' is one of those plants that makes you instantly double-take. Its rich wine coloured foliage is dark and luxurious and during the spring it has a show of vibrant tassle-like flowers that hang from the tree like decorations. This is not a plant to miss, and one that can add a lot of interest when grown as a specimen plant in a central arrangement. This has the added benefit of being tolerant to some shade. Pittosporum 'Silver Queen' is fantastic shrub for a silvered theme. Its rounded foliage is a fantastic shade of light green with a distinct silvery hue. It also has a fantstic white margin that appears slightly irregular but contributes nicely to the overall silvered appearance. Often used as a specimen plant it also has a show of purple brown flowers during the spring that are delicately scented but despite this is often grown for its foliage interest. Trachelospermum Jasminoides (sometimes known as the star jasmine) is an evergreen climber that is capable of reaching hights of 9m in ideal conditions. It has vibrant green slightly glossy leaves with contrasting small white flowers during the summer months which are quite strongly fragranced. This large tripod will make a stunning centre piece for a container. This specimen is a stunning spiral stemmed half standard plant. Ideal for planting into a container for a feature on your patio or in the garden. Each raceme of flowers reaches up to 45cm (18") long with a heavenly sweet scent. The twining stems of Wisteria are cloaked in attractive pinnate foliage throughout summer, which turns to buttery yellow in autumn. Its considered relatively hardy despite its exotic appeal although frost protection wouldnt go amiss! This particular variety has perhaps among the darkest foliage of all phormium, which is nearly black but a subtle green hue remains under the right light, and mostly near the base of the plant. It also has subtle red/burgandy margins.
